Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by the wrath of Hurricane Helene. As our beloved community continues to recover from this historic event, we recognize the need to come together as a community and clean hurricane debris from Tampa Bay. The Tampa Bay Debris Derby will continue, but we have made several modifications to the event.
For all volunteers interested in helping recovery efforts, we ask that teams remove marine debris from the shorelines. Teams should refrain from removing trash by boat due to unknown hazards in the water from the storm. Teams can remove debris along shorelines from Friday October 4 through Sunday October 6. Be sure to take a picture of your team helping this recovery effort and share it with the hashtag #DebrisDerby. There will not be a weigh-in component to this event; instead, we ask that volunteers place debris by the curb of their residence using FEMA sorting guidelines.
We are planning to come together for a Tampa Bay Debris Derby celebration later this year. During this celebration, all registered volunteers that participated in the Debris Derby will receive their free shirt, free lunch, and 5 raffle tickets that can be used to win prizes donated by businesses who support marine debris removal efforts. Stay tuned for further details.
We appreciate your flexibility and encourage volunteers to use best practices for removing debris. Please do not put yourself in unsafe conditions to remove debris.
IMPORTANT: All volunteers must sign the liability waiver before participating in the event!
