Register for Marine Science Camp at Weedon Island
Boredom is for the birds when there’s water everywhere in Pinellas County. Elementary-aged students have the opportunity to combine learning and outdoor fun during the upcoming Spring Break holiday. Interested parents and students are encouraged to consider “Going Coastal.”
The Going Coastal Spring Break Camp at Weedon Island is a three-day camp running from Wednesday, March 15 to Friday, March 17, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg. The camp, for students ages 7 to 11, focuses on marine science themes. The camp will offer participants a balance of recreational and educational activities intended to engage and challenge students with activities and team-building exercises. Scheduled activities and lessons will include:
• Coastal Habitat Hiking
• Guided Canoe Paddle
• Saltwater Fishing
• Ethical Fishing on the Weedon Pier
• Art Activities
Parents interested in registering their child for this opportunity can visit https://goingcoastalspringbreakcamp.eventbrite.com. Registration is first-come, first-serve.
The camp will be taught by an UF/IFAS Extension Sea Grant Agent. Mentors from The Ohio State University Buck-I-SERV program will serve as teaching assistants for the program. UF/IFAS and OSU have a six-year partnership providing marine science education for young people.
The camp is set up as a 4-H Special Interest Club. Parents will be required to fill out a 4-H membership and a liability form in order for their children to participate. The forms will be emailed to parents prior to camp. For more information, contact Libby Carnahan at (727) 453-6522 or email at lcarnahan@pinellascounty.org.
