Wastewater spill at South Cross Bayou

Pinellas County Utilities reports today that approximately 45,000 gallons of partially-treated wastewater spilled on the property of the South Cross Bayou Water Reclamation Facility located in unincorporated Pinellas County. The spill was discovered on Wednesday, Nov 2, at around 4:45 p.m., and was contained at around 8:20 p.m. by diverting flow to another section of the facility. A contractor is onsite repairing the pipe.

The spill poses no foreseen risk to public health, safety or welfare. The partially-treated wastewater was contained on the site and was recirculated back to the facility for full treatment. No contamination left the property boundaries or affected any bodies of water.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection was notified within its 24-hour emergency notification requirements. This new state rule requires additional direct notification to elected officials, the media and the public.
