Pinellas County to join TBEP Coalition

Pinellas County is pledging its commitment to join the Tampa Bay Estuary Program Coalition team as a participating party in the application for a 2016 United States Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant.

The grant is for the purpose of conducting environmental site assessments on properties located in priority areas identified in the Tampa Bay Estuary Program’s Sediment Quality Action Plan. The Tampa Bay Estuary Program will be the lead coalition member and will be the grant award recipient with administrative responsibility for the program.

A “Brownfields Site” is real property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of the site may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency’s brownfields grant program.

Brownfield sites also include, but are not limited to, three specific types of properties:

• sites contaminated by petroleum or a petroleum product
• sites contaminated by controlled substances
• mines or scarred lands
