Residents Urged to Survive, Thrive and Stay Alive

With hurricane season right around the corner, Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa and the Museum of Science and Industry are teaming up once again to host the 2014 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo to bring area residents the latest information on hurricane preparation. This year's event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at the Museum of Science & Industry, 4801 E Fowler Ave. Admission to the Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo is free.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and continues through Nov. 30. The hurricane expo's goal is to raise awareness about the importance of disaster preparedness. Expo attendees will learn what to do before, during and after a storm. Residents will learn the importance of having a solid disaster plan in place well in advance so they can quickly recover after a storm.

The event will provide kid-friendly entertainment, games and other activities. Adults and children will enjoy a display of various vehicles from first-responder agencies. A variety of speakers and vendors will also be on hand. Attendees also will have the chance to win one of two Kindle Fire HD tablets.

Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo attendees will hear from professional meteorologists during question-and-answer weather panels at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also, a resiliency/survivor's panel will take place at 10 a.m. where guests can hear real stories from people who have experienced and recovered from a disaster, along with expert advice and preparation techniques to protect themselves and their homes.
