New Speaker Series at Weedon Island: "Salty Topics"

News Image

Are all algae blooms harmful? Why are coral reef populations declining? Can fish "talk"? What is the difference between a squid and a cuttlefish?

A new speaker series, Salty Topics, is designed to connect the community with marine science research to help answer these questions and more. For example, Dr. Gary Mitchum kicked off the series with his talk on Sea Level Rise on Oct. 6.

The series will continue at Weedon Island Preserve when Dr. Jose Torres presents "Disappearing Silver: the Hunt for the Antarctic Silverfish" on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 1, Dr. Pamela Hallock Muller will present "Global Change in the 21st Century: Do Coral Reefs Have a Future?" For information on upcoming topics, visit the Weedon Island Preserve website.

Salty Topics will host researchers from local universities, government and non-government organizations at the forefront of marine research. The program is coordinated by Pinellas County Sea Grant Extension and sponsored by the Friends of Weedon Island.
