Lake Tarpon Canal
The Lake Tarpon Canal was built between 1967 and 1968 by the Army Corps of Engineers. It is presently operated and maintained by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The canal provides flood control protection to the region and a method of managing Lake Tarpons water levels. Previous to its construction the only lake outlet was the Lake Tarpon Sink which feeds Tarpon Springs. When the canal was completed the sink hole was cut off from the lake by an earthen dike that now surrounds the sink.
